Support for appropriate educational materials is crucial to the long term success of the quality education program.

This project will help to ensure a regular supply of the basics - pens, paper, writing books and textbooks (computers are unheard of) to the 11,900 children attending school in the impoverished Sotang district.

Project objectives

The project objectives are closely aligned to the UN Millennium Development Goal 2 (MDG2) and include:

•    developing child centred teacher training methods

•    providing relevant and appropriate teaching resources

•    increasing teacher and child attendance enrolment and in particular girls’ attendance in schools

•    Enhancing community support for schools by improving the relevance of education practices for children in poor rural communities

Background on Quality Education program

This is the 5th year (of a 9 year program cycle) that extends a program initiated by Sir Edmund Hillary’s Himalayan Trust. (Peter Hillary is an AHF Director). The  AHF’s program extends from the more affluent communities en route to Mt Everest (visited by many thousands of trekkers each year) to districts that are in dire need of educational support – this includes the district of Sotang where AHF focused its activities for the first three years.

Project partners

The Australian Himalayan Foundation's project partners are REED (Rural Education and Environment Development) in Nepal – an organisation that has conducted programs in the Solu Khumbu for the last 12 years and whose work is recognised as a centre of excellence by the Nepal Department of Education.

The AHF is a not for profit, non government organisation. AHF is also a member of ACFID.
