Background
South Africa is a land of great contrasts. Millions of people in South Africa go without food and other basic needs. The country has made great leaps toward democracy and prosperity, South Africans also have one of the world's highest HIV prevalence rates. Around 18% of the adult population are HIV positive, including 28% of pregnant women.
In the rural province of KwaZulu-Natal 40% of adults are living with HIV. The pandemic has severely impacted on communities and traditional lifestyles. With so many sick adults unable to work, farming land has been left fallow. When children are orphaned they often face stigmatism, without access to healthare, education or even food.
Here there are few opportunities to earn a living. Men are forced to move to cities to find work and many women and children are left behind, going hungry on unproductive land.
What is covered in the project
Oxfam Australia is supporting eight local partners to create many positive outcomes for vulnerable rural communities in South Africa. With your support this project will ensure hundreds of people will receive food from veggie gardens planted in homes, schools and communities, and food handouts to support people who can’t grow food for themselves — like orphans, vulnerable children, the sick, the elderly and the desperately poor. Agricultural support will help grow more food, ensure farmers’ groups are stronger due to improved management skills and provide for advocacy work to help to access more government support.
Objectives, Aims and Outcomes
1. Help poor communities access enough nutritious food.
In South Africa, the reality is that some people still need basic food handouts. Oxfam Australia will help to provide emergency food parcels to people who are desperately poor.
Food gardens will be planted, providing long term access to nutritious food. Gardens will be established in community spaces, schools and in the homes of vulnerable families. Any excess food can be sold at local markets.
Vulnerable people will receive training on how to develop new ways of earning a living, like beekeeping or craft. Added income will support food gardens and improve their standard of living.
We will support partners to install water harvesting equipment to ensure community agriculture and food gardens have enough water to thrive.
Farmers groups will be strengthened with training and the opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences with farmers from other communities.
2. Support families so they can care for their most vulnerable members.
People lacking official documents will receive support to apply for government-issued ID. Official ID is essential to get work, go to school, see the doctor, get medicine and access social services.
Communities will receive help to apply for social grants.
People living with HIV and AIDS will get help to access treatments, including antiretroviral treatments
3. Give partners the skills they need to help change the laws that keep people in poverty.
Partner organisations will learn how to establish, develop and run successful advocacy campaigns.
Campaigns will include advocating for alternative water sources and lobbying the government to provide more drinking water.
Oxfam Australia will provide training and support to partners for water harvesting and purification.
